Winning a poetry contest isn't going to be easy. You may have hundreds of writers writing on the same topic as you and all trying to impress the judges. But there are certain approaches you can take to help you win.
First, keep it simple. Don't go off the beaten path too much. Look at the classic poems and what makes them great. Learn from the experts that have proceeded you. So study first - write later.
Second, don't submit your poem to the poetry contest right away. Don't be that poet that clicks the "submit" button to save their poem and then regrets it a minute later. Let that poem sit for awhile, walk away, return and edit.
Third, understand the rules. As explained, by this judge understanding the rules is very important. If you submit a poem that doesn't follow the rules it won't even be considered.
Fourth, imitate (don't copy) the style of your favortite poet. You are writing poetry. So something made you interested in it. Capture that and apply it to your writing.
Keep a leg up on the competition and submit your best possible poem to the poetry contest. Study the masters and let your poem mature before sending it to the judges.
